SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Commissioners unanimously approved a $600,000 contract with Maddie’s Place to provide long-term housing and treatment support services for caregivers of babies with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
The contract money comes from the county’s Opioid Settlement Fund. These funds are the result of litigation against companies responsible for the supply chain of prescription opioids.
The National Institute of Health said babies with NAS experience health challenges due to drug withdrawal. The syndrome is most commonly associated with maternal opioid use.
The services provided by Maddie’s Place through this contract includes housing and supportive living services, integrated childcare support, care coordination and case management.
According to the county, the Board of Commissioners expects to consider at least two more Opioid Settlement Fund contracts this fall. These include a $5 million contract to expand the Spokane Regional Crisis Stabilization Center by adding a Crisis Relief and Sobering Center and a $1.2 million contract for direct treatment services and the expansion of behavioral health triage and sobering services.
Payments from the Opioid Settlement Fund are expected to continue until 2038. County officials said this will provide Spokane County with over $17 million in resources to help people struggling with addiction.
