SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — The city of Spokane Valley is pursuing a state grant to renovate Edgecliff Park, which sits west of Dishman Hills and south of Apple Way.
The city is applying for funding through Washington State’s Recreation and Conservation Office grant program to support the design phase of renovations. They are specifically applying for the second round of the PRA program, which supports ‘site-specific planning’ for an individual park location.
John Bottelli, director of Spokane Valley Parks and Recreation, noted the park’s age and need for updates. “Edgecliff is one of our older parks that was built by Spokane County, and we inherited it when the city incorporated back in 2003. So, it’s really been some time since it’s had a makeover,” Bottelli said.
If approved, the renovations would include replacing a restroom that has sat on the grass for at least four decades without a clear and accessible path. The city would also redesign the playground which currently sits with a concrete barrier, that could restrict access for some children. They are also thinking about adding a new updated parking lot.
“It’s very important that we improve ADA access within the park. Not only is the restroom aging, but there’s no way to get to and from it without just crossing the grass, which maybe you and I can do…. but maybe not every resident can do,” Bottelli said.
He also says they would make it a point to include the community in certain parts of the design. For example, they could change the current sport courts. “We really want to go through that process of public engagement, to make sure that what is in the master plan reflects the desires of the community,” Bottelli said.
Botelli says they expect to complete the master renovation plan within the next two years. After that, he will push to pursue state and federal funding to build the renovations.
