Spokane, Wash. — One year after Sarah Doxey was killed by a drunk driver while running, her community gathered to honor her memory by completing the same route at the same time she would have run it.
On the anniversary of her death, friends and family laced up their running shoes at 5 a.m. to retrace the path where Doxey, a devoted runner, was struck down. The early morning run held special significance — those close to her said her morning runs were her personal time, a cherished part of her daily routine.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been a year,” said Carolyn White, Doxey’s mother. “But to see these people, Sarah’s people, her group, come out and honor her with this run is just heartwarming. It fills my soul, lets me know that she hasn’t been forgotten.”
Beyond her identity as an avid runner, Doxey was a mother, wife, and valued member of the Spokane community. Those who knew her describe a woman whose impact extended far beyond her athletic pursuits.
Laura Carrey, a friend of Doxey’s, remembered her as someone who uplifted those around her. “She loved to spread her joy, and her encouragement. She was such an encourager in everyone and becoming a better mom and becoming a better employee in, how to lead people. She was a leader of all leaders.”
In addition to the memorial run, Doxey’s loved ones are preserving her legacy through an endowment fund established at CHAS Health, the organization where she worked at the time of her death. The fund accepts donations that will be directed toward community members in need, allowing Doxey’s spirit of generosity to continue helping others.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with Doxey’s death. He later pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a range of 30-80 weeks in jail.
