POST FALLS, Idaho — Drivers in Post Falls will gain a new route onto eastbound I-90 starting tomorrow morning, but they’ll need to navigate complex detours throughout the week as construction crews complete final phases of a major interchange project.
The new eastbound on-ramp, accessible directly from State Highway 41, opens tomorrow morning. However, the opening triggers a series of nighttime closures that will redirect traffic through alternate routes.
Beginning tomorrow at 8 p.m., the westbound on and off-ramps will close completely. Drivers heading west on I-90 who need to reach State Highway 41 will exit at Exit 6 and loop around. Those traveling west on I-90 from State Highway 41 will need to exit at Seltice Way and access the on-ramp from Spokane Street.
On Thursday night, the eastbound off-ramp will close at 8 p.m. Drivers traveling east on the interchange who need to reach State Highway 41 will have to use either Exit 5 or Exit 7.
The construction project, officially called the Single Point Urban Interchange, has been underway since August 2022. Local businesses in the surrounding area have endured three years of construction activity and traffic disruptions.
“It’s frustrating. You know we’re going on three years of this, and we’re just ready for it to be over and to have full access coming into our restaurant,” said Chanda Miller, assistant manager at Capone’s TC.
The Idaho Transportation Department says the project is scheduled for completion by fall 2026. Officials expect the finished interchange will improve safety in the area, increase traffic flow efficiency, and create better connectivity among roads in the region.
The completion of this project represents a significant step forward for Post Falls infrastructure.
Although this project is coming to an end, additional work is starting on Ponderosa Blvd, closing the westbound lane between south Westwood Dr and South Ross Point Rd due to the Westwood Water Improvements Projects that began in May. It is already impacting a number of roads.
For local businesses, the timing could not be worse. Capone’s Pub and Grill relies on Ponderosa Boulevard as the main road customers use to access their parking lot. The closure threatens revenue during what should be the restaurant’s most profitable months.
“With this road closure, we’re anticipating just a lot less people which is unfortunate because this time of year is so much more lucrative for us with all the tourists coming through town,” said Chanda Miller, assistant manager at Capone’s Pub and Grill.
The $1.5 million water improvements project is scheduled to be completed by August. The Idaho Transportation Department says the Single Point Urban Interchange project is scheduled for completion by fall 2026. Officials expect the finished interchange will improve safety in the area, increase traffic flow efficiency, and create better connectivity among roads in the region.
