Spokane Valley, WASH. — The city of Spokane Valley has been awarded nearly $21 million in federal funding to overhaul a major intersection that handles significant traffic volume in the region.
The U.S. Department of Transportation granted the money to support the Sullivan Road and Trent Avenue interchange reconstruction project; a significant investment aimed at improving mobility and safety in the community.
The current interchange will be replaced with two new roundabouts—one on Sullivan Road and one on Highway 290. The project also includes construction of a shared-use path along Sullivan Road’s west side and a new, wider sidewalk on the east side.
City officials say the improvements will decrease traffic congestion and enhance safety for drivers and pedestrians navigating the busy intersection.
“This project is a transformative investment in our community to improve mobility and safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen our local economy,” Spokane Valley Mayor Laura Padden said. “We look forward to the positive impact these improvements will have on our residents and businesses.”
The Sullivan Road and Trent Avenue interchange serves as a critical junction in Spokane Valley, and the current configuration has presented challenges for traffic flow during peak hours. The addition of roundabouts is expected to improve traffic efficiency by allowing continuous movement rather than traditional traffic signals.
The shared-use path and enhanced sidewalk will provide safer options for pedestrians and cyclists, addressing community needs for alternative transportation methods in the area.
The estimated total cost for the entire project is approximately $50 million. The city has currently secured about $41 million of that budget, including the federal grant. Officials are continuing efforts to secure the remaining funding needed to move forward.
Once the city finalizes all funding sources, officials will announce a timeline for when construction can begin. The project represents a major infrastructure investment for Spokane Valley and reflects the city’s commitment to addressing transportation challenges while supporting economic development.
Residents and businesses in the area can expect more details about the project timeline and construction phases in the coming months as funding is confirmed.
