Spokane, WASH. — The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture welcomed families and history enthusiasts Wednesday evening to explore its newest exhibition, “Iron and Honor: The Art of Knighthood,”.
The exhibit features authentic medieval armor and artifacts that traveled from the Steebert Museum in Florence, Italy. In partnership with the Spokane Renaissance Fair, the museum created an immersive experience that brought the medieval era to life through interactive activities and costumed performers demonstrating historical lifestyles.
“Tonight’s a very special night,” said Wes Jessup, MAC Executive Director. “We are working with the Spokane Renaissance Fair and they have some different activities going on, and we have this exhibition open, so it’s a really good way to see some activities and actors living out the medieval lifestyle.”
The opening night drew visitors of all ages, from young children experiencing their first glimpse of authentic medieval pieces to adults seeking deeper historical knowledge. Museum officials emphasized the educational value and accessibility of the exhibition for families in the region.
“It’s such a popular era in history so there are so many families that want to come and see the real thing,” Jessup said. “Most people don’t have the chance to see this so it’s a real unique opportunity.”
For many Spokane-area residents, the exhibit represents a rare chance to engage with authentic historical artifacts without traveling abroad. Museum leadership stressed the importance of bringing world-class exhibitions to communities that may not have the means or opportunity to travel internationally.
“Because of where we are in the inland northwest, sometimes it’s really wonderful to bring things from the outside in, and not everyone here gets to travel and go out and see different things,” Jessup explained. “So this is our way of giving back to the community and really welcoming them in.”
The museum’s commitment to making history accessible extends beyond the exhibit itself. Officials view the “Iron and Honor” exhibition as a gateway for families to develop a deeper interest in historical periods and encourage educational engagement.
“If you’re looking for a way to engage your kids in history, this is a really wonderful place to do that with this exhibition,” Jessup said.
The “Iron and Honor: The Art of Knighthood” exhibit will remain on display at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture through October 11.
