SPOKANE, Wash. — Summer break means freedom from homework and early mornings for many students, but for some families, it also means losing access to a critical resource: school meals.
Yoke’s Fresh Market is addressing this challenge through its annual “What’s for Lunch” program, which runs through June 30. The local grocery store chain offers multiple ways for community members to help feed children during the summer months.
Shoppers can donate any type of food at local Yoke’s locations, round up their purchases to the nearest dollar, or purchase pre-made $10 or $20 food bags that are delivered directly to area food banks.
“It is our duty, I believe, to do that, to feed people,” said Chud Moses, store manager at Yoke’s Foothills location. “A lot of kids are struggling throughout the summer time. There are a lot of parents struggling even right now to put food on the table for their kids. So we don’t want that to be a thing for the summertime when they are home. To have lunch and you know be able to provide food, is important.”
Community members can participate by visiting any Yoke’s location or donating directly to local food banks. Second Harvest will handle the distribution of collected food throughout the summer.
