SPOKANE, Wash. — A vacant piece of land in Spokane’s North Indian Trail neighborhood will transform into the city’s first new park in more than two decades.
It will be called Meadowglen Park, and the city says more than 2,800 homes near the neighborhood do not have access to a park within walking distance.
Carl Waters has lived by vacant piece of land for three decades and expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming addition.
“I’m glad there’s going to be a park. I’m pretty sure everybody’s going to use it,” Waters said.
Meadowglen Park will offer multiple recreational opportunities for families and individuals. Once complete, visitors will be able to enjoy a new picnic area, a volleyball court and trail access. For those who feel like taking a walk through the ponderosa pines, 16 acres of the property will remain preserved as natural land.
“A lot of people walk their dogs along the easement back here, and that’s how I see them walking their dogs. I think they’d have a nicer park over there,” Waters said.
The park is being paid for by the Together Spokane Initiative that was approved by voter last November. The Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office has also awarded another $2.5 million towards the project.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, and the park is expected to be completed in a year.
