PULLMAN, Wash. – In the chaos of conference realignment, Washington State and Oregon State wanted to make sure they had a football schedule for their 2024 season. That’s when a scheduling agreement between the Pac-12 and the Mountain West conference was born.
For the 2025 season though, the Pac-12 has decided to not extend the scheduling agreement with the Mountain West.
Is it because the Cougars think they can get something better? Maybe.
But Washington State has only two games against “power five” schools this season, which means only two opportunities to prove that they can hang with the big dogs.
The Cougs are preparing for Texas Tech this weekend and will head to Seattle for the Apple Cup next weekend. Impressive performances against a Big-12 opponent in Texas Tech and a Big-10 opponent in Washington is important for WSU’s resume to prove they can still flourish at the power five level.
Coach Jake Dickert said it doesn’t matter who they are playing; it’s business as usual.
“It’s a faceless opponent and our second opportunity to prove who we want to be as a football team,” Dickert said. “We train in the dark so in those moments in the spotlight, we’re conditioned to do what we’re trained to do.”
The Cougars will face the Red Raiders Saturday September 7 at 7 p.m.
