SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Indians’ bullpen had no chance against the top half of the Vancouver Canadians’ order tonight, as they rocked Avista Stadium in a 14-6 win.
Spokane fell behind 5-0 after the third inning when Kendry Chirinos hit a grand slam, but then the Indians roared back with six-straight runs, capped off by a Juan Castillo single.
Vancouver replied again, taking the lead in the top of the sixth, and scoring another five runs in the seventh.
Spokane broke out the ‘King Carl’ jerseys for today’s Jackie Robinson Day. ‘King Carl’ honors the late Carl Maxey, a 32-0 collegiate boxer at Gonzaga, helping the Zags to win a share of the 1950 lightweight NCAA Boxing Championship. He later became a leading Northwest civil rights leader and lawyer.
Spokane recovers for game three of the six-game series, playing tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.
