SPOKANE, Wash. — A 42-year-old Spokane man died Saturday morning when his vehicle crashed into a parked car along the Centennial Trail after losing control at a high rate of speed on Upriver Drive, according to Washington State Patrol.
Gregory Sharkey was driving westbound on Upriver Drive around 11:13 a.m. when he lost control near North Upriver Bend Lane, state patrol officials said.
Sharkey’s vehicle left the roadway and struck another vehicle in a designated parking area along the Centennial Trail, according to the patrol. Sharkey’s vehicle then struck a tree on the trail.
Sharkey was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. The Spokane County Coroner’s Office completed the next-of-kin notification process, according to state patrol.
The occupant of the parked vehicle was not injured in the collision, patrol officials reported.
Both vehicles were totaled in the crash, according to the state patrol. Officials are investigating the cause of the collision and have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
The investigation remains ongoing, state patrol said.
