SPOKANE, Wash.– Giving seniors a community of people to socialize with is one of the missions of the Corbin Senior Activity Center.
To help bring people in, they host a variety of activities.
Activities that keep seniors from being isolated and at home.
“That applies to many of our seniors who are living alone. It only emphasizes the importance of having a gathering place where people can come and feel like this is their living room,” Corbin volunteer Denise Fanazik said.
But keeping those activities going requires funding, which has led to frustration for the leaders at the senior center.
“We’re hoping we can get a little more to keep going with our programs. Too many programs are being cut,” Corbin’s Board President Theresa Phillips said, “it’s so sad because some of the seniors are here and they love to do their games.”
Some of those cuts are due to their funding from Spokane Parks and Recreation staying the same over the last 10 years.
The center has also had to cut certain positions from its staff because of a lack of funding, so it leans more on volunteers that are already spending hundreds of hours a month at Corbin.
“Corbin runs on volunteers,” Board Member Jan Charbonneau said, “we don’t have the money to hire the full-time people that we need, so we rely on our volunteers.”
But late today at the recreation board meeting, some good news for the center.
The city recommended raising the funding for Corbin to $46,000 from $31,000, which gets them closer to their goal.
