A Spokane tradition is hitting a major milestone this year — the Bloomsday race this May will be the 50th in the city’s history.
The race has been around since 1977, and since then, it’s become the eighth-largest single-distance road race in the country. Organizers say they encourage people to participate — especially since it’s the 50th anniversary.
“Not many races make it this far,” said Bethany Luecke, the race’s sponsorship and communication director. “And I don’t think there’s any sign of us slowing down. So we’re really excited.”
This year, there’s a few extra events on the agenda. The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture and Terrain Gallery will host exhibits commemorating the race. Terrain’s exhibit will open on April 3.
A “Run with the Perennials” — those who have completed every Bloomsday race — will be held at No-Li Brewery on March 31.
Registration is open now. It’s $30 to register until April 1 — that’s when prices will start to increase.
The race will take place May 3. Registration will close the day before.
