AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — Police are asking residents to watch for two moose spotted roaming through town neighborhoods.
The Airway Heights Police Department is tracking the moose calves in the Landreth Park area. The animals have stayed relatively close to the same location.
Cindy Stockman encountered the animals last Wednesday near her home on 6th Avenue.
“All I could say was moose!” Stockman said. “I wasn’t really scared. I was leery though, but it was pretty neat seeing them.”
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reminds residents that moose are wild animals requiring caution.
“Moose are really cool to see, and people get really excited about them, which is great. We just the main thing is we want to remind people that they are wild animals,” said Staci Lehman, communications manager for Fish and Wildlife.
Wildlife officials stress that residents should not interact with or feed the moose. Keep a safe distance, especially with pets, as moose can become aggressive.
If confronted by a moose, slowly back away and put an object like a car between yourself and the animal.
“As long as they leave them alone, they should just be ‘moose’ things and move along eventually,” Lehman said.
