PORTLAND, Ore – The number one team in the WCC never led in the second half in a battle with the 10th-ranked team in the conference Wednesday night, losing 87-80 to the Portland Pilots.
It was just the second loss of the season for the Zags, ranked sixth in the nation. Their previous loss was to second-ranked Michigan on November 26th.
Portland was 3-8 in conference play before Wednesday’s game, 10th in the WCC.
It’s only the third time Portland has beaten Gonzaga. The last time was in 2014.
Gonzaga shot just 40% from the field and 33% from three.
Their only lead in the game was 28-26 with 6:55 left in the first half.
The Zags got it to within four with 26 second left, but couldn’t close the gap.
Graham Ike was the bright spot for Gonzaga, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Mario Saint-Supery was the only other Zag in double figures, finishing with 12 points.
Joel Foxwell led the way for the Pilots with 27 points.
Gonzaga stays in Oregon to face the Beavers of Oregon State on Saturday.
The loss could hamper Gonzaga’s hopes of a one or two seed in the NCAA tournament.
The win was the first over a top 10 team in Portland Pilots history.
