CHENEY, Wash. — While most people head to the mountains for winter recreation, a new indoor facility in Cheney is creating year-round opportunities for BMX bike racers.
509 Indoor BMX is preparing to open what will be the only indoor BMX track in the Northwest, giving riders the chance to train and compete regardless of weather conditions.
“It’ll be the only indoor track in the northwest,” said track operator Brenden Tarr.
The project required more than 250 truckloads of clay to fill the building near the intersection of potted Road and Andrus Road.
Crews have spent several weeks molding the clay into a premiere race track with assistance from Billy Allen, a master track builder known throughout the country.
“Billy Allen was our track builder. He was here all last week. He roughed the track in, and then we have to go through, smooth it out, pack it in and make it race ready,” said Tarr.
The hard-packed clay track features jumps, straightaways and plenty of opportunities for speed. Crews have been working all this week to prepare the track.
“We’ve been here all this week grooming it, smoothing it out, packing it down,” said Tarr.
The facility addresses a significant gap in Northwest BMX racing opportunities, particularly during winter months when outdoor tracks become unusable.
“There’s a lot of guys that want to ride. They just don’t have the opportunity in the northwest because snow weather, but there’s a lot of kids I want to race year round,” said Tarr
509 Indoor BMX welcomes participants of all ages and skill levels, making it a truly family-oriented sport.
“We have kids that are two years old that race Strider bikes, and there’s people 60 and over that race.” Said Tarr “It’s very family oriented. But it’s just something fun to do, and anybody can do it. Any skill level.”
The facility offers flexible membership options including one-day passes, 60-day passes and full membership packages to accommodate different levels of participation.
Organizers hope to have the track ready for practice this weekend, pending final preparations including gate setup and track smoothing. The facility’s first official race is scheduled for January 2.
“It’s a lot of fun. Anybody can do it,” said Tarr.
