MEAD, Wash. —Teachers in Mead will now have to think twice before decorating their classroom, picking out an outfit, or sending an email.
The Mead School District has adopted a new self-expression policy that limits staff displays of personal beliefs in educational settings.
The policy restricts political, social and religious expressions in classroom decorations, email signatures, staff clothing and other communication channels. District officials say this policy is to ensure that school environments remain welcoming, inclusive, and focused on learning for all students.
“School environments become venues for political ideological signaling. It could be by, you know, anyone from any perspective. And because of that, students can feel tension or anxiety or exclusion and all that equates to a barrier to learning,” said Michael Cannon, Mead School Board President.
The school board approved the policy during a recent meeting, with members voting in favor of the measure.
The new guidelines are based on a policy created by the Washington State School Directors Association. Districts across Washington state, including Spokane Public Schools, have implemented similar policies.
The Mead School Board made modifications to the original policy, choosing to remove provisions that would have regulated staff members’ personal social media posts.
“We are not going to put district resources into becoming social media police,” officials stated during the meeting.
The policy has drawn criticism from some community members who argue it goes too far in restricting teachers’ individualism. Critics shared concerns via social media that the policy will eliminate valuable conversations that broaden minds when people can express themselves freely.
School board members maintain that important educational discussions will continue and emphasize that the policy only applies to pushing personal beliefs, not academic content.
“Our goal is not to sanitize content or to avoid difficult topics, or to dilute rigorous learning,” Cannon said.
