OLYMPIA — Pets cause approximately 750 accidental home fires annually nationwide, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Animals typically trigger fires by interacting with cooking equipment, fireplaces, space heaters, lamps, electrical wiring and candles.
Washington state recorded 1,173 fires caused by open flames in 2024, highlighting risks pet owners face when using candles and similar items around curious animals, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends these safety measures:
• Keep pets away from cooking areas and kitchen appliances
• Use flameless candles instead of traditional candles around pets
• Install fireplace screens and maintain a three-foot “pet-free zone” around fireplaces
• Secure electrical cords that puppies and kittens may chew
Fire officials say simple preventive measures can eliminate most pet-related fire risks.
