CLE ELUM — Westbound I-90 will face limited closures as the Washington State Department of Transportation replaces an overpass damaged by an over-height truck near Cle Elum.
Westbound I-90 reopened Friday following the Oct. 21 incident at Bullfrog Road, according to WSDOT.
Contractor crews worked 22 hours under an emergency contract to remove the damaged portion.
The highway will remain open until WSDOT begins replacement work, requiring closures primarily at night, officials said.
“The loss of this overpass severely impacts the Cle Elum, Roslyn and the Suncadia area,” Governor Bob Ferguson said in a statement. “We will work as quickly as possible to replace this vital connection for the community.”
The overpass serves 1,500 vehicles daily, while 17,000 vehicles travel this I-90 section daily, according to WSDOT. This marks the fourth bridge strike requiring repairs since August.
“We’ve seen too many bridge strikes,” Ferguson said. “They are preventable, and we are working on strategies to reduce them.”
WSDOT engineers are designing repairs, with an updated timeline expected in December, the agency said. Ferguson’s emergency proclamation allows the state to seek federal reimbursement.
During construction, travelers can expect full westbound closures with traffic detoured over ramps, WSDOT said.
The state will seek reimbursement from the truck operator. Washington State Patrol is investigating the incident.
