PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State Cougars (4-4) used their only home game in a 54-day span to crush the Toledo Rockets (4-4) in an impressive 28-7 win.
WSU featured a solid home crowd, one the players and coaches welcomed happily.
“And I told him [Josh Meredith], it was nice to throw a deep completion and hear everybody roar,” WSU quarterback Zevi Eckhaus said. “Like here, everybody’s proud of what we’re doing. Obviously, the past two weeks, we’ve been on the road, they’re not too happy when you get a completion or a good play on them.”
“We need the fans and the boosters and everything more than ever,” head coach Jimmy Rogers said. “We’re about to change, walk into a different conference in a year, and we need to hit the ground running with the fanbase that’s really rowdy and supports their football team.”
Linebacker Parker McKenna dazzled in a breakout performance, finishing second on the team in total tackles and hauling in Wazzu’s first interception on the season.
“He keeps growing, and he’s always been a good tackler,” Rogers said. “He’s probably the most physical tackler on our team. Week in and week out, he just keeps flying to the ball and making plays.”
“So yeah, it was cool to get the first one and be in that position,” McKenna said.
The offense hummed with Eckhaus leading, despite two interceptions. He led the Cougs in rushing with 74 yards and a score, plus 159 passing yards and two scores through the air.
“These guys in this room believe that that’s the offense we can have, and we can be week-to-week,” Eckhaus said.
Washington State heads back on the road again to take on the Oregon State Beavers this Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
