CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Back-to-back weeks at ranked opponents, back-to-back heartbreaking one-score losses for the Washington State Cougars.
The Cougs led 20-10 heading into the fourth quarter, but then they allowed a 97-yard UVA touchdown drive, a game-tying field goal inside three minutes, and Virginia tackled WSU running back Kirby Vorhees in the endzone for a leading safety only 14 game-time seconds later.
While Cougs QB Zevi Eckhaus scored a rushing touchdown and another through the air, he threw two interceptions and posted his worst quarterback rating of the season.
Josh Meredith was Wazzu’s offensive MVP, hauling in seven catches for 108 yards and a score. He set season-high numbers in receptions and yards while scoring his first touchdown since Week 1 vs. Idaho.
The loss drops WSU to 3-4 overall, 1-3 on the road, and ends this road stretch with a 1-2 record.
For the first time in over a month, Washington State returns home. They host the Toledo Rockets (4-3) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
