SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Police released the body camera footage of an police shooting from back in February.
On February 9, 2025, SPD responded to the Hart Terrace Apartments in East Central for reports of “suspicious activity.”
SPD says when they arrived, they ran the license plate number of a truck in the parking lot that had people inside. The truck was registered to Robert Charles Botzon, who had an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest for failing to register as a sex offender.
In the bodycam footage, two SPD officers approach Botzon as he is walking back to the truck. One officer says “Hey Charles,” to which Botzon responds “I’m not Charles.”
SPD then tells Botzon to put his hands behind his back. Officers then tell Botzon to stop resisting and put him face down on the ground.
An officer can be heard in the video shouting that Botzon had a gun. After that, an officer can be heard yelling “stop resisting I’ll f***ing shoot you right now.” The officer then says the gun was under Botzon and continued to say Botzon needed to stop resisting or he was going to shoot.
While Botzon was on the ground, a gunshot could be heard. An officer called over the radio, “shots fired.”
SPD says officers arrested Botzon and provided emergency medical care before he was taken to a local hospital. The shooting is currently being investigated by the Washington State Patrol.
