SPOKANE, Wash. — Layoffs at the City of Spokane are expected to impact 30-50 positions, the city announced on Tuesday.
According to the city, approximately a third of those positions are currently vacant.
The city’s Civil Service Department is still determining the exact positions affected, but Mayor Lisa Brown says she does not want to eliminate roles within the public safety departments.
“These decisions are never easy and we recognize the impact they have on employees, their families, and the general public,” said Erin Hut from the City of Spokane.

“As Mayor Brown and the City Council work to close the current deficit, the City of Spokane is preparing for a workforce reduction that is expected to impact approximately 30-50 positions. About one-third of those positions are currently vacant and will be eliminated as part of the current effort to align staffing costs with available resources. “These decisions are never easy and we recognize the impact they have on employees, their families, and the general public. The Administration and Council are continuing to review all possible options as they prepare to pass the mid-biennium budget modification.”
The city says specifics about the positions affected should be known in the coming weeks.
