RATHDRUM, Idaho — Construction begins Monday on Main Street in downtown Rathdrum as the city launches a $500,000 state-funded revitalization project to update its commercial district.
The comprehensive improvement project will replace deteriorating sidewalks and curbs, refurbish and add streetlights and increase parking on a city-owned lot in the downtown area. The work will unfold in three phases, with the first phase starting on the south side of Main Street between McCartney and Mill Street.
Crews will begin by tearing up old sidewalks that have been buckling and are in serious need of repair. The aging streetlights, while still functional, will also receive attention as part of the downtown makeover.
The project timeline depends on favorable weather throughout the construction period.
The most noticeable change residents have already observed is the removal of several trees that previously lined Main Street. The tree removal has left the downtown area looking emptier, with visible stumps that crews will remove during the construction process.
During construction, parking will be limited and adjacent street sections will likely be closed during each phase of work. However, city officials have ensured that access to downtown businesses will remain open.
