Coaches and school staff ejected from WIAA sporting events will have to pay a fine, under a new rule passed by the sports organization that is now in effect across the state.
The WIAA passed new rules this year, citing the need to decrease the number of people ejected from high school competitions.
Now, if a coach is ejected from a game, the school will have to pay a $200 fine.
If another school staff member is ejected, it’s a $500 fine.
The rules also say if a fan is ejected from a state contest, the WIAA will levy a $500 fine.
Schools are not fined for player ejections with one exception.
The WIAA put in a special rule for boys’ soccer players, saying if they’re ejected for bad language, it’s a $100 fine.
767 people were ejected from competitions in the 2024-2025 season. That’s up slightly from 754 the year before.
Boys’ soccer accounted for 27.5% of those ejected, with 198 players and 13 coaches ejected from competition.
Football was second with 194 total ejections, followed by boys basketball and baseball.
No volleyball players or fans were ejected in 2024-2025.
Players and coaches are required to complete sportsmanship and behavior courses before returning to competition, along with an automatic one-game suspension.
The WIAA says the only way to appeal an ejection is with video evidence, not through written statements.
