OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is concerned about the state’s math test scores compared to national averages.
According to scores from the National Assessment of Educational Progress, 4 states statistically significantly outperformed Washington in 4th grade math.
But 14 statistically significantly outperformed Washington in 8th grade math.
State averages from the Smarter Balanced Assessment show 70.9% of students statewide showed grade-level knowledge or skills in reading in 2024.
63.3% of students were at grade-level for math.
Spokane Public Schools were just below those state averages.
68.4% of SPS students performed at grade-level in reading, and 60.7% were at grade-level in math.
Other districts like Central Valley and Mead were above the state average in reading, math and science.
