SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane County Interstate Fair opened its gates amid smoky conditions caused by regional wildfires.
Visitors to the fairgrounds noticed the hazy backdrop wasn’t from barbecue smoke but rather from wildfires burning in the region. The smoky conditions prompted concerns for sensitive groups who may want to limit extended outdoor exposure during the weekend.
Erin Gurtel, Director of Spokane Fair and Expo Center, acknowledged the air quality concerns but emphasized the fair’s extended run provides flexibility for attendees.
“There’s still going to be a lot of opportunity for people that maybe have sensitivities to the smoke to come out another day,” Gurtel said.
Fair organizers expressed optimism that weather conditions will clear up as the event progresses through its 10-day schedule, which runs until September 14th.
Vendors at the fair are hoping for weather relief as well. Kris Ritchie, who has been selling ice cream with Mary Lou’s since 1991, said she’s looking forward to clearer skies.
“Hopefully a little drizzle will help with everything,” Ritchie said.
Despite the smoky conditions, the fair continues to draw visitors for its traditional attractions, including rides, games, animals and food vendors.
For Ritchie, the fair holds special significance beyond business.
“My husband and I had our first date out here at the fairgrounds. Yeah, that was 52 years ago,” she said.
The longtime vendor emphasized the community connections formed at the annual event.
“We know each other well. All of us. Every vendor out here. And then the customers keep coming back,” Ritchie said.
Mary Lou’s offers homemade treats, including huckleberry cobbler, brownies, ice cream, elephant ears and apple pie fries, all made with their own batter and recipes.
“We make all the huckleberry cobbler, the brownies, the ice cream, the elephant ears. We roll the dough out. Everything’s our own batter, even the apple pie fries.” Ritchie said.
Gates open daily at 10 a.m. and the fair continues through September 14.
