OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. — A Red Flag Warning for fire weather conditions will go into effect Sunday night for parts of Okanogan County, according to Department of Natural Resources.
Around 4:30 p.m. on August 31, National Weather Service Spokane issued a Red Flag Warning for thunderstorms, starting at 9 p.m. going through the night until 11 a.m. Monday morning.
The affected areas are Okanogan Highlands, Kettle Mountains and the Colville Reservation in Okanogan County.
“A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now….or will shortly. A combination of strong winds…low relative humidity…and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior,” said DNR.
People in the affected areas should be aware of scattered thunderstorms with light rain and gusty, erratic winds.
New fires are likely to start from lightning strikes and spread with the windy conditions.
