SPOKANE, Wash. – A fire in East Central Spokane destroyed a warehouse full of custom glass Wednesday night. Fire investigators may not be able to determine a cause.
The fire started just after 8 p.m. Fire crews called for a third-alarm response. Dozens of firefighters worked to control the flames. By morning, only rubble remained.
The fire broke out a block north from the Post Office on Sprague Ave. When fire crews arrived, flames were shooting out of every window and doorway.
Sunshine Wigen saw the blaze while working nearby.
“I was Doordashing out on Sullivan by Five Guys on Sprague and Sullivan. I could see the smoke from this fire all the way out there,” Wigen said.
Spokane Fire believes the fire started inside the building.
“The fire was pretty advanced by the time we got here, so no interior firefighting operations,” said Justin De Ruyter, the public information officer for SFD.
Part of the building collapsed during the fire. SFD is now working with the city to demolish the remaining shell, but remains uncertain about the cause.
Some neighbors speculate about what caused the fire. City records show 14 code enforcement calls at the warehouse since 2018. The calls included reports of illegal dumping and camping. Several nearby businesses say trespassing is a problem at the property.
No one was in or around the building when crews arrived. No one was hurt.
The fire department warns the remaining shell poses a danger. Officials hope to demolish it within the next day or two. The demolition will make it harder to determine how the fire started.
Road closures will remain in place until then.
“I feel really bad for the people, their business and stuff,” Wigen said.
