SPOKANE, Wash. – Multiple construction projects in the Spokane region are on pause due to a strike that began on Tuesday, causing significant delays and bringing traffic to a standstill in some areas.
The North-South Corridor Project and the Greene Street Bridge Project will remain stopped until the strike ends. Both projects will cause significant delays during the work stoppage.
Outside of Inland Asphalt, International Union Operating Engineers were picketing. Both the workers and multiple union representatives declined to comment on why they are on strike.
The union is in contract negotiations with the construction coalition. The Associated General Contractors (AGC) also refused to comment when contacted.
The community has mixed reviews about how the strike will impact them. Stanley McKenzie shared his perspective on the situation.
“I haven’t been congested with the traffic. But as far as the construction goes, if it’s something that’s going to make improvement and it’s going to make it overall better for everybody, why not?” McKenzie said.
While some say we all just need to be patient, others say the constant construction delays are frustrating.
The owner of Burrito House, a restaurant on the corner of Greene and Mission, says the construction is hurting her business and looks forward to when it will finish.
“Just have to be patient with it,” McKenzie said.
The lane closures on Greene Street were set to wrap up on Monday, August 18. Now, nobody knows when work will resume.
Other paving projects in both Pullman and Chewelah have also stopped.
The Idaho Transportation Department says the I-90 widening project and the Pleasant View Interchange in Post Falls may also experience delays if this strike continues.
