SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – Spokane Valley Fire is investigating yet another string of suspicious fires.
At 2 a.m., fire crews were called to three fires burning near the Mirabeau Trailhead. Five minutes later, just a half mile down the Centennial Trail, there were three more.
Because of the nature of these fires, investigators believe they were set by the same person.
“It’s an easy thoroughfare for people to go down, whether they’re riding a bike or walking or even on a lime scooter,” said Abraham Nisbet, Assistant Fire Marshal for the Spokane Valley Fire Department. “The thoroughfare of the trail provides an easy opportunity for individuals to commute and cause multiple starts.”
These six fires join a long list of intentionally set fires that have been happening across the Inland Northwest this summer.
“The number of fires has increased from previous years into this year,” Nisbet said.
Last week, a woman was arrested for allegedly starting 15 fires along the Spokane River near Myrtle Point. Some who live in Spokane Valley can’t understand why someone would do this.
“I think it’s pretty tragic that, like, people decide to cause harm and just start damaging things for others for no reason,” said Alexander Nozdrin, who lives in Spokane Valley.
The Spokane Valley Fire Department says it is doing everything it can to catch who is behind this and prevent any more of these fires from starting.
“All it takes is one of these fires getting out of hand to damage our community, our neighborhoods, and possibly injure individuals,” Nisbet said.
The fire department is working with the Spokane Valley Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office to catch who is behind this. Anyone with information about these fires can call Crime Check.
