CHELAN COUNTY, Wash. — An injured hiker was rescued from a mountain pass near the Enchantments wilderness area on Tuesday morning, according to Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 6:15 p.m. on August 11, a call came in from a hiker near Colchuck Lake about someone yelling for help on Aasgard Pass. The caller said they believed the person yelling had an ankle injury.
Around 8 p.m., another call came in reporting the hiker was somewhere on the southern edge of Aasgard Pass near the cliffs of Dragontail Peak. The caller said the man yelling for help had a possible broken or sprained ankle, wrist and tailbone.
Around 11 p.m., Chelan County Mountain Rescuer volunteers were deployed to the top of Aasgard Pass and made their way to the injured hiker, a 21-year-old man from SeaTac, Washington. He was about 900 feet above Colchuck Lake.
CCSO said, because the injured hike was stable, rescuers decided not to attempt an airlift rescue at night, due to their close proximity to the cliffs.
The rescuers stayed with the injured hiker overnight and he was airlifted out in the morning. Two additional rescuers hiked out with his hiking partner that morning.
The injured man refused further treatment.
CCSO said the man had attempted to ascend Aasgard Pass in the wrong area.
“The common route is along the north edge of the pass. CCSO recommends researching hiking routes thoroughly and being equipped with navigation aids while hiking. Aasgard Pass is a difficult, dangerous climb and a through hike of the Enchantments should only be attempted by experienced hikers,” wrote CCSO in a statement.
