OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. — Fire crews are using drones to help further contain the multiple wildfires burning on the Colville Reservation on Sunday afternoon, according to Department of Natural Resources.
The wildfires burning on the Colville Reservation, also known collectively as the ‘Kinkaid Creek Complex’ fires, are made up of three main wildfires: the Kinkaid Creek Fire burning at 254-acres, the Bear Creek II Fire burning at 260-acres and the South Nanamkin Fire burning at 80-acres.
As of Sunday afternoon, the Kinkaid Creek Fire is 100% contained, the South Nanamkin Fire is in Patrol Status and the Bear Creek II Fire is 0% contained.
DNR said crews at the Bear Creek II Fire are currently working to construct and strengthen firelines.
on Saturday, crews used a drone to detect heat and provide visuals of terrain, vegetation and current fire behavior.
“Drones can safely cover hard-to-reach locations, thereby minimizing firefighter exposure to hazards,” said DNR. “This information helped with risk-informed decision-making as firefighters continually assess and adjust strategies for suppression of the Bear Creek II Fire based on changing conditions.”
DNR said less humidity and temperatures in the 90s could contribute to more active fire behavior Sunday night.
