SPOKANE, Wash. — Voters are once again showing support for a fire district levy that was originally approved in April, but had to be re-run due to an error.
As of Tuesday evening, 61.42% of voters are in favor of Spokane County Fire District 8’s levy lid lift.
If approved, the levy would raise property taxes by 21 cents per $100,000 of assessed value. For a home valued at $750,000, the increase would amount to approximately $13 per month.
The levy passed in April with 57% of the vote, but officials soon realized they filed the original measure incorrectly.
Fire District 8 submitted the first levy with Consumer Price Index information that is only permitted on ballots during August primary or November general elections, according to the district’s legal counsel. The error is what prompted voters to cast ballots again on the same measure in the August 5 election.
The levy, if passed, would fund two additional paramedics and replacement of aging emergency equipment, including cardiac monitors and defibrillators.
Votes will continue to be counted over the next few days and results will be certified on August 19.
