STEVENS COUNTY, Wash. — Firefighters are continuing work to protect structures threatened by an over 2,000-acre wildfire near Tumtum.
As of the latest update, the Lake Spokane Fire is still 2,338 acres and 16% contained.
The fire started on July 19 near Lake Spokane Campground just outside of Nine Mile Falls.
Rain and moderate weather on Monday helped reduce fire activity throughout the day. Fire crews were able to make significant progress in stopping the forward progression of the fire.
Incident management says protecting homes and structures in the area remained a high priority.
Crews will continue building fire lines and may conduct a small burn operation near Highway 291 and Mount Godfrey if conditions are right.
People may see more fire and smoke along Highway 291 while the fire continues to slowly burn to the highway. Please slow down on Highway 291 and watch out for fire crews and equipment.
Level 3 (GO NOW) and Level 2 (Be Ready) evacuations are still in place near the fire. You can check the live evacuation map by clicking here.
A Red Cross Shelter has been set up at Lakeside High School. Large animals can be taken to the Springdale Rodeo grounds.
