SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Zephyr kickoff their inaugural season on Saturday.
The team hosted their kit release party at Brick West Brewing.
Fans were able to purchase the jerseys and meet the players.
“To be a part of this new team and see how much it’s grown is just so exciting,” midfielder Sophie Braun said.
The kits are black or white with gold trim and an imprinted “Z” to represent Zephyr.
“The gold is awesome,” Braun said. “It’s a great reflection of the gold we’re going to bring home, hopefully.”
But the accolades come second to the next generation of young woman they hope to inspire.
“I think Spokane has some amazing young soccer players,” Braun said. “Getting to come face to face with people who you could be one day is cool and inspiring. We hope we’re passing that along.”
Zephyr means “wind from the west”, but the attitude is “win” from the west.
Spokane is the only west coast team in the USL Super League.
“We plan on destroying the east coast,” owner Katie Harnetiaux said.
This dream team that seemed like a longshot years ago is now a reality for Harnetiaux and the rest of the ownership group.
“We’ve been told we were crazy,” Harnetiaux said. “But honestly looking at this vibe, looking at Spokane, they’ve come out, they’re proud of their teams. We’re so excited.”
The Spokane Zephyr kick off the season on Saturday at 6 p.m. at One Spokane Stadium against Fort Lauderdale United FC.
