SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane may implement stricter water restrictions as drought conditions worsen and river levels drop.
Currently, people are asked to water their lawns only four days a week. Residents cannot water between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to help conserve water.
The city says watering during the day, especially when it’s hot, means much of the water evaporates before it soaks into the grass.
The city also says Spokane uses much more water than the national average during summer.
“There are a lot of reasons why we don’t need to use as much water. We over-water our landscape. So that’s why we’re always encouraging you to water every other day, only water two hours a day,” said Kirstin Davis of the City of Spokane.
If river levels keep dropping, the city will ask residents to water only two days each week. The city would also ask residents to avoid washing driveways or sidewalks.
The city hopes residents will conserve water before it restricts watering guidelines further.
“We can’t control weather patterns, we can’t control what our runoff is going to be or what our snow levels are going to be, but we can control how much we’re watering and especially avoiding that over-watering that we tend to do,” Davis said.
