DAVENPORT, Wash. — A wildfire northeast of Davenport has grown to more than 6,000 acres and remains uncontained, forcing Level 3 evacuations as firefighters battle heat and wind conditions.
The Western Pines Fire, burning approximately 10 miles northeast of Davenport, has scorched 9 square miles of dry terrain. Fire crews have been unable to establish any containment around the blaze, according to fire officials.
“We just want to urge that level 3 evacuations are still in place. We still have quite a bit of fire activity all around the fire,” said Connor Nikkola, public information officer for the Department of Natural Resources.
Level 3 evacuations mean residents must leave immediately for safety. Close to 150 people have evacuated, with some staying at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds, officials said.
Aerial firefighting continues with planes dropping fire retardant. Hot weather and steady winds have hampered firefighting efforts, according to fire crews.
“People are losing their livelihoods and so we want to really reach out to them and say we’re here for them,” said an evacuation center official.
Evacuation orders remain in effect as fire activity persists around the blaze perimeter, authorities said.
