LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. — Highway speed cameras on I-90 in Liberty Lake and I-5 in Skagit County have been removed by the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The camera was part of a pilot program that aimed to encourage drivers to slow down along I-90 and I-5 in Spokane and Skagit counties. Cameras have been in place for more than two months.
WSDOT says the cameras gathered speed data and generated notices that were mailed to the registered owners of vehicles that were caught driving over the speed limit.
WSDOT said that in 2023, speeding was a factor in 358 fatal or serious injury crashes on state highways.
Since the program started on April 10, more than 16,000 notices have been mailed to encourage drivers to slow down.
WSDOT said these notices were not fines and it will now analyze the data from these cameras and report the findings to the state Legislature. The final report will be ready this fall.
