SPOKANE, Wash. — Whether you’re hitting the court or cheering the players on from the stands during this weekend’s Hoopfest, there are a few things to keep in mind to stay healthy and safe for the world’s largest 3-on-3.
Dr. Nicholas Strasser, medical director for Hoopfest, said preparation is key to staying safe during the tournament.
“Aggressive hydration several days before. Double the amount of liquids you think you need,” Strasser said.

Strasser recommends players play a few pickup games and stretch before the tournament begins. He also said it’s important to properly inspect equipment and the court.
“Good footwear, ankle protection and really spying your court ahead of time. Nothing wrong with getting there early, making sure there’s no foreign objects, nothing that you’re going to slip on,” Strasser said.
Jeffery Groby plays ball and agrees with the cautious approach.
“You don’t want to get on the court and try to go left and right too fast and get yourself injured,” Groby said. “Play at your own comfortable pace and whatever suits you the best, stick with that.”
For spectators, safety is equally important. It’s important to stay alert while navigating downtown crowds, watching for uneven surfaces and taking breaks when needed.
Families attending the event should also discuss safety plans with children, including staying together in crowds. It’s also suggested to have kids wear bright colors to make them easier to spot in crowded areas.
If you do get injured, multiple MultiCare medical tents will be stationed throughout the Hoopfest area, offering free assessments and treatment.
“One of the worst things you can do is take some pain medication and get back on the court without getting assessed,” Strasser warned.
He also said it’s important to limit your heat and sun exposure throughout the weekend.
“And then of course, [it’s important to] find cooling spaces, whether that’s in the shade or indoors,” Strasser said.
