PULLMAN, Wash. — WSU held its final practice before the first scrimmage of fall camp.
The defense won the day capped off by a pair of interceptions from defensive back Jackson Lataimua and linebacker Parker McKenna.
“Oh I’m ready. I’m ready,” Lataimua said. “I’m taking everyday day by day. But Saturday when we get those opportunities to capitalize and be live that’s where it’s make or break.”
Offensively there is still room for improvement. Freshman running back Wayshawn Parker said pass protection will be a major emphasis moving forward. Quarterbacks John Mateer and Zevi Eckhaus each were responsible for an interception at the end of practice.
“We’re all competitive so we don’t like to take L’s,” Parker said.
Saturday’s scrimmage will be a chance for the coaches to determine who plays and who sits during the regular season. This includes the quarterback battle between Mateer and Eckhaus.
“I hope it’s a hard decision for us,” defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding said. “That’s what we emphasize with our guys. It should be a hard decision to put out there because guys are playing so well.”
Mateer and Eckhaus are still neck-and-neck for the starting spot. The QB competition is expected to last through the first week of the regular season.
“John Mateer has the abilities to extend plays,” Schmedding said. I think the quarterbacks are competing. Both of them are doing a great job.”
WSU’s first fall scrimmage kicks off at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday in Pullman.
