SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane invites you to join many of the celebrations happening for Juneteenth today and this weekend.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It takes place on June 19 every year.
On Thursday, June 19, there will be a Juneteenth Celebration in Grant Park from noon to 4 p.m. This event is designed for guests of all ages. There will be live music, entertainment, food, child-friendly activities and more.
Later that evening, the NAACP is hosting a Juneteenth Fire Side Chat with former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Gonzaga Hemmingson Center.
The Spokane Indians will also host King Carl Night on June 19 at 6:35 p.m. in Avista Stadium. The Indians will be celebrating the life and legacy of civil rights activist and champion boxer Carl Maxey. Players will be wearing special King Carl jerseys that will then be auctioned off to benefit the Sandy Williams Fund.
On Friday, June 20, the 12th Annual Pillar Awards will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Fox in Spokane. These awards celebrate those who help uplift the African American community in Spokane. You can RSVP for this event by clicking here.
On Saturday, June 21, the Soul Food Fest and Resource Fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MLK Center. You can come out to enjoy soul food while learning more about local resources.
Also on Saturday, you can come out to enjoy The Art of Us, a Juneteenth celebration that honors the artistic expression of African American culture. This event is free to the public and includes live performances, visual art and more.
