SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — As you head out on your summer adventures, it’s important to be mindful of how to keep yourself safe while camping and on the water.
With the warm weather, many in the Inland Northwest are pulling out their boats, campers and RVs, but not without risk. Last year alone, the Washington State Fire Marshal reported 453 fires involving recreational vehicles, resulting in seven deaths.
Just this past weekend, a fire broke out on a boat on Coeur d’Alene Lake.
“First and foremost, be aware. Be aware of your campsite. Be aware of what’s going on around you.” said Cheryl Dimmick, camp host at Riverside State Park.
Dimmick said it’s crucial to prepare your campers now by testing smoke alarms, checking batteries in smoke detectors and ensuring fire extinguishers are functional and accessible.
“You [need to] know where it is and that it’s functioning and you know how to use it. So, having a fire extinguisher is great, but if you don’t know how to use it, it doesn’t help you,” Dimmick said.
Campers are also advised to keep gas appliances off while driving or fueling up and to inspect electrical and propane systems for leaks or damage before traveling.
For boaters, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to keep fire extinguishers on board and ensure life jackets are easy to access.
Personal safety is also key, Dimmick said, urging people to stay aware and hydrated. “Stay hydrated, take care of yourself and have fun,” she added.
Even on the water, hydration matters. When you’re dehydrated, your attention can slip, making summer fun more dangerous.
