ISLAND COUNTY, Wash. — A young angler who caught nothing during spot prawn opening day due to seasickness received an unexpected gift from a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officer who had just cited three other anglers for significantly exceeding their catch limits.
WDFW Officer Denny was conducting inspections at an Island County boat ramp last week when he contacted a vessel with three individuals fishing for spot prawns, according to WDFW.
The anglers initially presented three legal limits totaling 240 prawns. State regulations allow 80 spot prawns per person per day.
Officer Denny noticed an open hatch and observed additional bags of spot prawns inside. He discovered and seized an additional 292 undeclared prawns, according to WDFW.
The total catch exceeded 530 spot prawns, more than double the legal limit. Officer Denny referred charges to prosecutors and confiscated the overlimit prawns.
Later that day, Officer Denny contacted another vessel that returned early after a young passenger became seasick. Officer Denny donated a legal limit of the confiscated prawns to the young angler, WDFW said.
