COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — As the weather starts warming up and more people hit the road, it’s important to be extra alert when behind the wheel.
Memorial Day marks the start of the ‘100 Deadliest Days of Summer,’ a period of time between Memorial Day and Labor Day when first responders say they see an increase in car crashes.
In 2024, over 80 deaths occurred during this time, according to Idaho State Police.
ISP said increased temperatures and more traffic also lead to more frequent road rage incidents during the 100 days.
Jerome Rodney was heading from Washington to Minnesota on Sunday and said although everything seems fine on the road, he always keeps his guard up.
“While I’m driving, I make sure I’m comfortable. I check my Ps & Qs and I don’t let other people’s actions affect me, except to slow down or speed up when necessary,” he said.
ISP said it’s also important to keep water in your car in case of emergencies, minimize distractions and make sure you are alert and well-rested when driving.
Drivers should expect to see more patrols across Idaho and Washington who are out and about trying to make sure you get to your destination safely.
