BOISE — New legislation in Idaho is bringing with it changes to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Starting in July, drivers can choose between two new “World Famous Potatoes” license plate designs, including a black plate with white text for $70 or a teal plate with white text at no additional cost.
Other laws include allowing residents to use passports instead of birth certificates for proof of identity, limiting the use of license plate readers so they are law enforcement only and getting rid of the front plate requirement for vehicles without a front plate bracket.
Drivers will also now be able to list emergency contacts on driver’s license and state ID applications. This is optional and would only be accessible to law enforcement.
Other laws focus on clarifying parent-student driver training hours and requiring background checks for any staff who access DMV systems or customer information.
