BOISE, Idaho – Idaho joined several other states Friday, asking the federal government to let the state prohibit people using SNAP money from buying soda and candy.
Idaho passed a House Bill 109 last session, which was designed to promote healthier food choices for people receiving support from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP.
It needs the USDA’s approval to make the change.
Governor Brad Little directed the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare to submit a waiver request, authorizing the change.
“My administration is committed to securing the necessary waiver as quickly as possible so we can improve lives and Idahoans’ overall health,” Little said. “I appreciate the support of USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and the Idaho Legislature as we promote the MAHA movement in Idaho.”
Reuters reported in April that four states had already made similar requests.
Texas made a similar request this week.
