On the evening of April 13th, a 12-year-old girl walked to the parking garage at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and jumped.
Sarah Niyimbona had been a patient at the hospital for months, being treated for a mental health crisis.
“Is nobody safe?” her mother Nasra asked. “She managed to jump and they found her 30 minutes later. Where were they? What is the trust we give to them to take care of our kids?”
Sarah’s death is the most extreme example of a crisis here in the Inland Northwest and across the nation. Teenagers are suffering and many of them are dying by suicide.
That’s why 4 News Now is dedicating a week of coverage to Teens in Crisis. Beginning with Sarah’s story Monday, we’ll also explore what went wrong and detail what’s happening with that investigation. We’ll also share resources available in the community, what’s missing and who is filling in those gaps.
You can watch Teens in Crisis the week of May 19th on 4 News Now.
