SPOKANE, Wash. — With summer fast approaching, many people are eager to swim in our lakes and the Spokane River. But if you do decide to get out on the water, make sure you are taking steps to prevent drowning.
In 2023, three people drowned while recreating in the Spokane River. For 2024, that number has more than doubled with 7 recreational drownings. Another recreational drowning happened in Clear Lake.
“In 2024, we did see an increase in the number of recreation drownings. It’s still only eight, but only eight. They’re all preventable deaths,” said Dr. Veena Singh, Spokane County Medical Examiner.
These preventable deaths happened at various locations along the river. Some drownings were attributed to intoxication.
“We do see drowning deaths in people who are intoxicated. And intoxication is a risk factor for drowning,” said Dr. Singh.
The medical examiner says these deaths can all be prevented. Spokane Regional Health District advises you to swim with a buddy and look out for each other.
Also wear a life jacket; Washington law requires one on all boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards while on the river.
Know your limits, don’t swim out further than you can swim back, and avoid really cold water.
“We do see drowning combined with hypothermia a lot. That’s because the river or whatever water the person is in generally is still cold into the summer,” said Dr. Veena Singh, Spokane County Medical Examiner.
You can check Spokane River’s temperature before heading in. The Spokane Riverkeeper tracks it, and today it’s around 55 degrees. Experts warn that temperatures below 50 degrees can be life-threatening.
