MOSES LAKE, Wash. — People living in a homeless encampment near Moses Lake received notices saying they need to leave the property by Thursday or face criminal charges.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, deputies along with Colville Tribal Police attached eviction notices to more than 50 trailers and RVs at the Hiawatha homeless camp, saying they have to leave by 10 a.m. Thursday or face trespassing charges.
The Sheriff’s Office said the eviction was a request by the Colville Confederated Tribes, who say the site has been a problem for law enforcement over the past few years. This includes an increase in assaults and burglaries or thefts from properties near the camp.
The site also poses a safety and health risk due to fire potential in the area.
The notice also told the residents that moving to the Moses Lake Sand Dunes was not an option.
Deputies will go back to the site on Thursday to make sure everyone has complied with the eviction notice.
